Weekly photo challenge: Free Spirit

I want to go to the blue sky

to lay upon the clouds.

To fall, endlessly.

Through time

Through blue

Through the earth

And on and on and on.

  1. Beautiful. Everything. Thanks.

  2. You should go skydiving and truly experience the sky! (“If riding in an airplane is ‘flying,’ then riding in a boat is ‘swimming.’ To experience the element, get out of the vehicle!“)

Your post made me think of the John Magee, Jr. poem, High Flight. Do you know it? It’s a favorite among skydivers.

“Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
    And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air….

“Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace.
Where never lark, or even eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
    – Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.”

    ~John Gillespie Magee, Jr., 1941

  3. I have heard only the last line, perhaps in relation to some event with the space program.

Elements can be experienced in many ways. I appreciate a hot fire without immersing myself in it. I am plagued by a nearly debilitating fear of heights which, fortunately, does not apply to flying.

    Thanks for coming by!
